Facebook is considering the possibility of introducing user authentication in the blockchain

The Creator and CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg considers the possibility of using the blockchain in the authentication processes of users of various web services, without relying on third parties.

In an interview with Harvard Professor, Jonathan Zuckerberg (Jonathan Zittrain), Zuckerberg noted that at the moment Facebook Connect is a popular user authentication system for third-party sites and services, however, a solution to the distributed registry can become an alternative option for performing these tasks.

"I think about how it would be possible to use blockchawing technology in the authentication processes and providing access to users for various services, but at the moment I do not quite understand the options for the implementation of this idea, - said Facebook CEO. - Functions that currently execute Facebook Connect can be shifted to something truly distributed. In fact, the user lies its data into a decentralized system and subsequently uses them for authentication, while not resorting to third parties. "

Zuckerberg also noted that such a system can be interesting for software developers who do not want to trust corporations capable of limiting user access to various resources. But there are also disadvantages in the use of a decentralized system - no possibility to counteract attackers.

He recalled last year's scandal when Cambridge Analytica sold personal information provided by users. "This is a violation of our policies. Access for them was subsequently closed. "

"If we integrate a truly decentralized system, then, on the one hand, the possibilities of users will significantly expand. However, sometimes it is much easier to regulate random large companies. It seems to me that this is an interesting public question, - said Zuckerberg. - It is primarily in whether you need a distributed system? Do you have the necessary number of people who wish to do without intermediaries? It should be understood that in this case there will be more cases of abuse, and it will be much more complicated to manage the resources. "

The Facebook Creator also said that there is a lot of effort to implement such an idea, since there are technical barriers associated with decentralized technologies.
